Mike and his team at County Action Restoration took excellent care of us when we discovered two leaks that had seriously affected two different areas of our home. Mike came out promptly to assess the damage and returned later to capture some additional information that he incorporated into a broader restoration plan. He was responsive throughout the process, patiently explaining how the work would be done and even drawing diagrams to illustrate the approach. When we realized that a big part of the plan would require waiting until the spring (to avoid freezing temperatures), Mike immediately suggested that we push ahead with a smaller carveout of the larger project so that we could bring one bathroom back online quickly in time for the holiday season. His team member, Dave, came out twice last week to complete that work and coordinated tightly with our longtime plumber to ensure everything fell into place swiftly and sequentially. Dave was outstanding and very personable, walking us through the work and discussing the various stages as he completed them. The end result is a bathroom that is not only fully functional but also so completely restored and polished that you would not know it required it a big repair. We are so pleased with the work and look forward to completing the rest of the project with Mike, Dave, and their colleagues this spring!

County Action Restoration cleaned up my basement after the sewer line broke, making my home livable again. Immediate response time through a referral from Zoom Drain, Sam and his team were thoroughly equipped and capable of cleaning up black water and mold in a basement full of furniture. Sam also explained their method, and gave a follow-up call to check once all plumbing repair work was completed. Top quality restoration service from a locally owned company you can trust, thanks again County Action.

Mike McCullough and County Action Restoration helped us in so many ways when our cast iron sewer pipe broke under our house. Our house is built on a concrete slab with a sewer pipe 3 feet under the slab. Once determining the pipe was broken and causing the clogging, our plumber Tim Dean explained the only way to remedy the problem was to replace the cast iron pipe with PVC. To do that would entail cutting through the slab in the kitchen, rec room, pantry closet, powder room, laundry room and the front walkway. Tim suggested Mike McCullough and County Action Restoration. We met with Mike and quickly decided to use County Action Restoration for the entire project. Mike assumed the role of liaison with our insurance company as well as all the contractors and suppliers from slab demo and restoration to all new kitchen cabinets, counter tops, backsplash, flooring (tile and carpet), painting all rooms, and remodeling. Mike’s liaison with the insurance company was huge and resulted in virtually the entire project being covered by insurance. The only out-of-pocket for us were upgrades not covered by insurance. If you incur damage to your home from fire, water, falling trees, whatever, I highly recommend Mike and his team at County Action Restoration.

The staff at County Action went above and beyond to ease my stress during my time of need. Dave was efficient and polite answering all of my questions and doing the best he could possible in setting up the equipment in a way that wouldn't interfere with everyday interaction. When they made the repairs everything went smoothly and when they left they made sure the house was clean. I even decided to used them again to clean my carpets and my sofa. They're like a one stop shop! I highly recommend County Action.

Smoke Damage Cleanup FAQs

Understanding the various sources of smoke damage can help you take preventive measures to protect your home and health. Here are the most common causes:

1. Small Kitchen Fires

Even minor mishaps in the kitchen, such as a pot boiling over or food burning, can result in significant smoke damage. These incidents often produce black soot that can cling to walls, ceilings, and appliances.

2. House Fires

House fires, whether large or small, are a primary source of extensive smoke damage. The soot and ash left behind can seep into furniture, clothing, and other fabrics, leaving a persistent odor.

3. Smokey Oven Fires

Oven fires can occur when food spills or drips reach the heating elements, causing smoke. This smoke can leave residue on your oven and spread throughout your kitchen, affecting air quality and surfaces.

4. Indoor Cigarette Smoking

Cigarette smoke contains harmful chemicals that can stain walls, ceilings, and furniture. Prolonged indoor smoking can lead to a buildup of smoke particles that are difficult to remove and pose health risks.

5. Improper Fireplace Maintenance

A poorly maintained fireplace can emit excessive smoke, leading to soot accumulation on nearby walls and furniture. Ensuring your fireplace is clean and in good working condition can mitigate this risk.

6. Creosote Buildup in Chimneys and Fireplaces

Creosote is a flammable substance that can build up in chimneys over time. If not regularly cleaned, it can catch fire, producing thick, damaging smoke that can affect your entire home.

7. Wildfires

Wildfires can cause massive amounts of smoke to infiltrate homes, even if the fire itself does not reach the property. The smoke can penetrate through vents, windows, and doors, leaving behind soot and odor.

8. Indoor or Outdoor Cooking Accidents

Accidents during indoor or outdoor cooking, such as grease fires or burning food on a grill, can generate smoke that damages surfaces and decreases indoor air quality.

Understanding these common causes of smoke damage can help you take proactive steps to minimize the risks and maintain a safer living environment.

Selecting the right cleaning materials is crucial to preventing further soot damage to your home and belongings. All our products are EPA-approved

1. Soot Sponge

Also known as a dry-cleaning or chemical sponge, this tool is ideal for removing soot residues from surfaces without using water. It’s particularly effective on:

  • Ceilings
  • Floors
  • Lampshades
  • Other surfaces where you want to avoid moisture

2. HEPA Vacuum Cleaner

A powerful vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter can safely remove soot, smoke, and odors from most surfaces. Proper technique is essential to prevent soot from embedding further into the surface. For best results:

  • Move the vacuum slowly and methodically
  • Avoid pressing too hard, which can push soot deeper into porous surfaces

3. High-Alkaline Detergent and Degreaser

High-alkali detergents are particularly effective for cleaning oily soot residues left by low-oxygen fires. These detergents break down the greasy deposits, making them easier to wipe away.

4. Commercial Air Scrubbers

Air scrubbers trap soot particles released into the air during cleaning and help deodorize your space. They are essential for:

  • Improving air quality
  • Reducing lingering smoke odors

Dealing with soot on your walls can be a daunting task, but taking the right precautions can make it manageable. This is how we safely and effectively clean soot off walls.

Step 1: Protective Gear

Soot particles can penetrate the skin and severely damage the lungs. We protect ourselves by wearing gloves, a face mask, long sleeves, and pants. This gear helps prevent the transfer of soot to other surfaces and keeps you safe from inhaling harmful particles.

Step 2: Ventilate the Area

We keep the room well-ventilated to minimize breathing in soot particles and to dissipate smoke odors. Open windows and use fans to get the air flowing. We turn off HVAC systems to prevent it from spreading smoke and soot throughout the house.

Step 3: Cover or Remove Belongings

We remove items from the affected area to avoid further damage and allow for easier cleanup. We clean these items separately to remove the soot and smoke odor. These items will be sent to our cleaning center for individual cleaning. All clothes are sent to dry cleaning.

Step 4: Protect the Floor

We cover the floor with newspapers or sheets to prevent soot from falling on it and causing further damage.

Step 5: Remove Porous Construction Materials Affected by Soot

In some cases, selective demolition and removal of porous materials is needed. All porous materials are bagged and disposed of in our special containers.

Step 6: Vacuum Soot Residue

We use HEPA vacuums to remove obvious soot residue from the walls. Hold the nozzle about half an inch away from the surface to avoid smearing the soot. Avoid direct contact with the wall to prevent further damage.

Step 7: Use a Soot Sponge

We wipe away stains with a soot sponge. This step helps ensure that the soot doesn’t penetrate and cause a permanent stain.

Step 8: Wipe in a Downward Motion

We wipe the walls in a downward motion without scrubbing. Scrubbing can cause further damage to the surface. Hence we use gentle strokes until the surface is clean.

Step 9: Clean Residual Stains

Once most of the soot is removed, we use an EPA high-alkali detergent like dish soap mixed with water to wipe off any remaining stains.

Step 10: Rinse and Dry

We rinse the walls with plain water to remove residual detergent and soot. Then, we pat the walls dry with a towel to ensure all moisture is removed.

Step 11: Remove the Floor Cover

Once the walls and ceiling are cleaned, we carefully remove and dispose of the floor covers to avoid spreading any soot that may have fallen on them.

NOTE: For severe cases, demolition and removal of porous materials are needed through selective demolition.

Soot can cause dark stains on light carpets if not treated promptly and correctly. Attempting to scrub soot stains can push the soot deeper into the carpet fibers, risking permanent damage. Here’s how we effectively clean soot from your carpet and minimize smoke damage risks.

Step 1: Remove Large Soot Pieces

We gently lift and remove large pieces of soot. We avoid applying pressure to prevent the soot from crumbling and embedding deeper into the carpet.

Step 2: Apply EPA Absorbent Powder

We prepare your carpet by sprinkling an EPA absorbent powder to cover the soot stains. We allow the powder to sit for at least an hour, giving it time to absorb the soot. After the waiting period, we vacuum thoroughly. We repeat this step if necessary before moving on to the next phase.

Step 3: Blot Residual Stains

We take a white cloth and soak it in an appropriate cleaning solution such as hydrogen peroxide (EPA-approved), rubbing alcohol, or a dry-cleaning solvent. We gently blot any remaining stains with the cloth.  We avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain further.

Step 4: Rinse and Dry

After blotting the stains, we rinse the area with a cup of water or blot it with a towel dampened with warm water. We vacuum up any remaining cleaning solution and ensure the carpet is dried thoroughly to prevent mold growth.

Step 5: Seek Professional Help if Needed

If soot has affected large areas of your carpet, it’s best to seek professional smoke and soot damage restoration services. Our experts are equipped to handle extensive damage and restore your carpet effectively.
